TYG Tuesday: BeaSTY

Written by Shaina Greenberg, president of BeaSTY (Temple B’Nai Shalom, Fairfax Station, VA)

TBeaSTYYG-BeaSTY (noun)

Language of Origin- NFTYite

Definition- an expanding group of enthusiastic, dedicated, quirky, Jewish high schoolers committed to not only having a great time together, but creating a better community

Used in a Sentence- “Whoa, did you hear about those kids from BeaSTY at Temple B’nai Shalom?! They’re so excited to be hosting #MARFall15 in just 2 SHORT WEEKS!”

Here in Fairfax Station, Virginia, the amount of active reform Jewish organizations is fairly limited, but we don’t let that stop us! BeaSTY has been growing since our start in 1992 and has continued to make a name for ourselves. We are committed to being passionate members of the community and not limiting our actions to within the walls of the temple. Each year during the High Holy Days, BeaSTY organizes a food drive for the Lorton Community Action Center, an organization in our community that provides support for low-income families in the area; TBS has been partnering with LCAC for many years. BeaSTYites hand out paper shopping bags at Rosh Hashanah, and then collect all the filled bags with a smile at Yom Kippur. This year we collected over two and a half tons of food (!!!) and our congregation will continue to support them throughout the year.BeaSTY 22

The part of BeaSTY that cannot be forgotten are our awesome events and socials. We have a few trademark events each year, including BeaSTY Takes DC and our Shul In, but we are constantly innovating new ways to increase membership and enjoy each other’s company. This year we had a crazy Harry Potter themed field day with FeaSTY, the 5th and 6th grade youth group, and Jr. BeaSTY, our 7th and 8th grade youth group. Our Field Day featured a Sorting Hat, Quidditch, and Wizard’s Chess. We cannot wait to continue our year with musical havdalahs, youth alternative services, and our annual Mitzvah Mall.

While on paper, BeaSTY is doing all the right things, the real special sauce of our congregation are the people. There are smiles at every corner, hugs whenever you may need one, and a support system like you couldn’t dream of. The generations of BeaSTYites that I and my predecessors have come to know are without a doubt the keys to our Jewish future. We are so excited to welcome you all to our home in a few short weeks and share this experience together! Fall Kallah will be the event of your dreams, evidenced by the theme- We Have A Dream.

Set your countdowns to November 20th and get ready to be welcomed into the BeaSTY family- with arms wide open.
